Michael Keaton talks uncertain future as Batman in the DCEU
Fresh off his Emmy win, Michael Keaton addressed his uncertain future as Batman, as well as Batgirl’s cancellation.
Michael Keaton won his first Emmy Award at last night’s event, bringing home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for his performance in Hulu’s Dopesick. However, he also took the opportunity to address his return to his most famous role, Batman.
Originally playing the character in Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989 and its 1992 sequel Batman Returns, Keaton will reprise his role as The Dark Knight in the DC Extended Universe, starting with The Flash next year. He was also set to play the role in HBO Max’s Batgirl, until the Leslie Grace film was cancelled by Warner Bros. Discovery.
When asked about the film’s cancellation by TVLine, Keaton responded that he believes it was a business decision, adding “I’m going to assume it was a good one”. He also pointed out that he really doesn’t know as he doesn’t “follow that much”.
Will Michael Keaton be back as Batman in the DCEU?
The Batman star was also asked about his own future as the Caped Crusader in the DCEU, and whether or not he’ll don the cowl again after The Flash. “I don’t know. We’ll see,” he told TVLine, adding that it was “fun” and “great” to play the character in Batgirl but that he really doesn’t know if or when we’ll see him again in the DCEU.
Keaton’s future in the DC Extended Universe has been called into question in recent months. While his appearance in The Flash seems safe enough (provided the film actually will get the chance to hit theaters), the cancellation of Batgirl and the decision to reportedly swap out a Keaton-centric Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom post-credits scene with a Ben Affleck Batman one instead has raised a few eyebrows.
We’ll have to wait and see if Batman truly will return in the DCEU.
