Evan Rachel Wood as Mystique

Mystique deserved better. She was one of the many under-used X-Men in Fox’s original trilogy. Casting Rebecca Romijn was excellent. She looked the part as the seductive sinister right hand to Magneto. Unfortunately, the character was nothing more than a side character with little resemblance to the Mystique from the comics or the animated series.

Fox tried to fix their mistake by reintroducing Mystique with Jennifer Lawrence as a younger version. Unfortunately, the trilogy also misused Mystique and misunderstood her story. Fans of the character were once again disappointed.

Raven Darkholme is an Austria-born mutant. She also has a romantic connection to Destiny, with the pair being one Marvel’s greatest same-sex couples. Together they raise a young Rogue, which deserves a story of its own. Mystique has a deep and convoluted history, which ties to several mutants that include Wolverine. And she was a detective. A Mystique series writes itself. She’s also the biological mother of Graydon Creed, leader of the Friends of Humanity, and Nightcrawler.

Evan Rachel Wood would bring a commanding quality to the role of Mystique. She’s played a god-like character on HBO’s Westworld. As Delores, she showed her versatility as an actress, embodying all the qualities you expect to see. She’s the type of star you can build a series around and make her the big bad leader of a mutant group. It would be awesome if she reunited with her Westworld co-star, Thandiwe Newton (who would play a wonderful Destiny).

Actresses like Eiza Gonzalez, Ana de Armas, Ariana DeBose, and Katheryn Winnick are solid options for Mystique as well.
