Loki season 2 is on the horizon and the D23 trailer reportedly featured some unexpected references to The Avengers.

Of all the upcoming shows on the Marvel Studios calendar, Loki season 2 may just be the most anticipated. The first season, which premiered on Disney Plus last summer, was already one of the most intriguing properties in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe story before its premiere. That obviously increased a great deal after its six-episode run concluded.

The season finale saw the arrival of Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains, an alternate version of the MCU’s next Big Bad Kang The Conqueror. When he was killed by Sylvie, it had a drastic effect on the timeline, resetting things beyond recognition and leaving the God of Mischief, his friend Mobius M. Mobius, the Time Variance Authority, and even Kang himself in unexpected places.

The second season is in production and, even though it will be some time before it’s released on Disney Plus (the show is targeting a mid-2023 release), the cast made a surprise appearance at the Disney D23 Fan Expo event to unveil new footage in the form of a teaser trailer.

The audience got an exclusive look at what’s to come, along with some teases from Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, and Ke Huy Quan. And it turns out that the footage makes some unexpected references to none other than the Avengers.

Loki season 2 trailer references The Avengers

You remember the scene in Loki‘s first season where the God of Mischief and Agent Mobius have a metaphorical conversation about the end of the world over lunch, involving some questionable use of salad? Well, it turns out that the second season has a scene rather similar to that, and its sole purpose is to highlight how different things are.

As reported by The Direct, the scene showcases some of the differences in the timeline already due to the death of He Who Remains. It also features Loki discussing his brother Thor, his father Odin and the various Avengers he came into contact with throughout his time as a villain in the early days of the MCU.

During lunch, Loki tells Mobius that many people have considered him an enemy over the years but that he doesn’t want him to think the same (even though he initially did in the original timeline).

"Loki: “I don’t want you to think I’m the bad guy in all this.”Mobius: “Who says you were?”Loki: “Iron Man. Captain America. Hulk. Black Widow. Hawkeye. Phil Coulson. Thanos. Nick Fury. My father. My brother. Miss Minutes. You.”Mobius: “Hm.”"

From that, it seems that Loki season 2 will continue to emphasize how far the character has come throughout his MCU journey, as the former villain will attempt to fix the timeline, likely becoming an unlikely hero once again.

Those heroes he mentioned may not have had a high opinion of him at the time their paths crossed (and understandably so) but it’s clear that he has come a long way since then. Can he, Mobius, Sylvie and the TVA reset the timeline or is this reflective look on the past going to be another chapter in Kang The Conqueror’s rise?
