Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 and Marvel fans are freaking out.

It’s official! Wolverine is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We’re not just talking about any old Wolverine, though. No, we’re talking about the Wolverine. Yes, Hugh Jackman is back.

In a stunning announcement made by none other than Ryan Reynolds, it was revealed that Deadpool 3 is officially set for release on September 6, 2024. But as exciting as that it was, it came second to the next reveal – a reveal that involved Hugh Jackman himself turning up.

Speaking in a video posted on his official Twitter account, Reynolds spoke of the importance of making Deadpool 3 a special one since it’s the first of the franchise to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He then humorously revealed he had no ideas. Well, maybe one.

At that point, Jackman walked into view and Reynolds asked him if he wanted to play Wolverine one more time. Jackman simply answered “Yeah, sure Ryan”.

Is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3 part of the MCU?

Hugh Jackman played Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine, in Fox’s X-Men film series, appearing in X-MenX2X-Men: The Last StandX-Men Origins: WolverineThe WolverineX-Men: Days of Future PastX-Men: Apocalypse and Logan. The last of those was supposed to be his final appearance as the character, but his return in Deadpool 3 has changed things.

We know that Wolverine and the X-Men are set to be introduced into the MCU in the coming years. The question is: Will Deadpool 3 mark the beginning of that? It would seem so, as we know the third Deadpool movie is reportedly going to be canon to the MCU. But the problem lies in the fact that the previous two are seemingly set in the Fox X-Men universe. So while Jackman’s Logan and Reynolds’ Wade Wilson could have crossed over there, how will they do it in the MCU?

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reintroducing Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, there is room for the Fox variants of the characters to return. Especially since the MCU is in the process of slowly introducing mutants. But will Jackman’s claw-bearing mutant be the same one reference in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, or will he simply be a variant in Deadpool’s universe?
