Marvel’s new special Werewolf by Night leans into the classic black and white look inspired by horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, but is the full special in black and white?
October is officially underway and there is no better time to enjoy a good horror movie or Halloween special on your favorite streaming service. And thanks to Marvel, Disney Plus fans now have the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds via a brand new Halloween special Werewolf by Night.
In the new special, Marvel looks to explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe via a special that celebrates classic horror movies. By celebrating those classic films, Marvel has entered uncharted territory in many ways.
Not only does Werewolf by Night mark the studio’s first full venture into a horror program, but it’s also the studio’s first black and white title.
Why is Werewolf by Night in black and white?
The decision to air Werewolf by Night in black and white was a stylistic choice made by the special’s director Michael Giacchino who drew inspiration from horror films of the 1930s and 1940s. Giacchino has been open about being inspired by the classic Universal monster movies which is clear when watching the special on Disney Plus.
Is Werewolf by Night entirely in black and white?
If you’re watching Werewolf by Night and wondering if the special remains in black and white formatting from start to finish, you’re likely not alone. We know the speical has been promoted as being a black and white special but is the entire special in black and white?
While the majority of Werewolf by Night is in black and white, the special does eventually transition to color towards the end of the special. We won’t say how exactly the special transitions from black and white to color, just that it’s a truly stunning sequence that is beautifully done.
