Black Adam is the newest superhero movie on the horizon, but just which universe does he belong to? Is he part of DC’s DCEU or Marvel’s MCU?

It’s an amazing time to be a fan of comic books and superheroes, right?

It feels like we never have to go more than a couple of months without a major comic book entity arriving on the silver screen. And to make things even better, the last decade has seen a huge growth in superhero properties on television as well, with The CW’s DC shows and Disney Plus’ Marvel series changing the game.

With all of those properties on the big and small screens, it can be hard to keep track of who belongs to which universe, particularly as there are so many Marvel and DC characters, comic books, and upcoming projects.

The most recent example of this is the upcoming Black Adam. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the title character. But if you’re interested in knowing more about the movie before you see it, you might want to know whether it’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe.

Is Black Adam Marvel or DC?

Black Adam is part of the DC Universe. He made his debut in DC Comics back in 1945 and is something of an adversary to Shazam. He is also considered one of DC’s most powerful characters.

The film is also part of the DCEU, sharing continuity with previous films such as Man of SteelBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeWonder Woman (and its sequel), Aquaman and, of course, Shazam (for a full list of DCEU movies click here).

Dwyane Johnson has been very vocal about his hopes that this film could change the hierarchy of DC on film, with fans hoping that it will revive the universe that has been in need of a revamp since it began.

Black Adam arrives in movie theaters on Friday, October 21, 2022.
