House of the Dragon season 1 is coming to a close, but there are future seasons planned for the HBO hit — just don’t expect too many seasons.
From the moment Game of Thrones came to a close in 2019, we all knew it was only a matter of time before HBO would find a way to revisit the franchise that defined an era of television when it became one of the biggest phenomenons ever to hit the small screen.
Before the dust could even settle, HBO began working on several new projects set within the Game of Thrones universe and it didn’t take long for the first of these projects to arrive. Using George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel as inspiration, HBO returned to Westeros in House of the Dragon — a prequel set 200 years before the events that unfold across Game of Thrones.
It was a bold decision that seems to have paid off as viewers can’t get enough of the series which has become one of HBO’s biggest hits in years. Now, as the show’s first season comes to a close, fans are looking ahead to the future and wondering what could be next for the show.
Is House of the Dragon canceled?
First, let us be clear that House of the Dragon has not been canceled by HBO. The show has been a huge success for the network which is why it was quick to renew the series for a second season. This ensures the show will continue beyond its season 1 finale and will allow the writers to continue to adapt the story that plays out across Fire & Blood.
Will there be more seasons of House of the Dragon?
If you’re hoping for more seasons of House of the Dragon, you’re in luck! No only has the hit series already been renewed for a second season but HBO is said to be planning several additional seasons of the show as well. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as HBO continues to bet big on Game of Thrones and is looking to continue the franchise in many ways in the upcoming years.
In addition to developing new projects inspired by the series, HBO is pushing ahead with additional seasons of House of the Dragon. The second season has already been formally ordered and it’s expected that HBO will continue the series beyond its second season. However, it seems fans shouldn’t be holding out hope for too many seasons of the show.
How many seasons of House of the Dragon are planned?
Although it is possible the plans could change, there are currently said to be four seasons of House of the Dragon in total planned for the Game of Thrones prequel series. While perhaps disappointing for fans who’d love to see the show run as long as Game of Thrones, it shouldn’t be too surprising given the source material is not quite as significant as the source material that inspired the original series.
In an October blog post, George R.R. Martin told his readers that it will “take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish.”
The idea that the series will run for four seasons was also echoed by showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal in a report from The Hollywood Reporter which suggested that while nothing is carved in stone, the current plan is for the show to run three or four seasons.
Would you be happy if House of the Dragon only ran for three or four seasons? Do you think HBO will try to keep the show going longer than four seasons? Share your theories below!
