Marvel: Is Emilia Clarke playing Abigail Brand in Secret Invasion?

Could Emilia Clarke actually be playing Abigail Brand, or are things not what they seem?

Emilia Clarke’s role in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion was a mystery. Before the Disney Plus show was announced, this writer thought that she would make a great Jessica Drew. Not only could she be Spider-Woman, Emilia could also play the Skrull Queen Veranke.

That being said, anything is possible when it comes to Marvel Studios, so the possibilities were literally endless. However, it looks like the Game of Thrones star will be playing Abigail Brand.

As reported by Screen Rant, an official account for Secret Invasion was created for Tenor. One of the GIFs on the site was of Emilia Clarke and it was titled, “It’s The Beginning Abigail Brand.” The title has since been changed to “Its The Beginning Emilia Clark.” That means someone may have made a mistake. Whether or not that mistake was leaking the character or making an assumption about her character remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, Emilia Clarke potentially playing Abigail Brand is a fantastic idea. In Game of Thrones, she showed a variety of personality traits for Daenerys Targaryen. One of them in particular is apathy. When Daenerys was killing people on her dragon, she had zero remorse for the people being slaughtered. Fans were upset by the treatment of the character in the final season, but Clarke was incredible in the role and made the divisive season seem believable. That passivity will come in handy if she’s playing Abigail Brand.

Who is Abigail Brand in Marvel Comics?

Abigail Brand is Nick Fury of space. Instead of S.H.I.E.L.D., Brand runs S.W.O.R.D. And, like Nick Fury, she takes her job seriously. She’s aware that tough decisions have to be made. That means that people and aliens are going to die if it means that the universe continues on. We saw this in her comic book debut during Astonishing X-Men and now in X-Men Red. She’s not proud of it, but she knows it’s a job that only she can do. It’s an important part of Abigail’s personality and one that Emilia will absolutely crush.

If Abigail Brand is in Secret Invasion, it’s yet another way that Marvel is bringing up the existence of mutants in the MCU. It happened twice this year already in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Ms. Marvel. It’s also reported that Namor will be a mutant in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Why is this a hint to mutants? Because in Marvel Comics, Abigail Brand is an alien (on her father’s side) and a mutant (on her mother’s side). This could be another way that Marvel is subtly bringing mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It keeps fans happy, but it also shows they are taking their time to tell this story and not rushing it.

With all that being said, it has still yet to be confirmed if Emilia Clarke is playing Abigail Brand. Marvel has taught fans to never assume you know everything. The Hulk appeared in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War during the battle in Wakanda but the actual movie features Bruce Banner in the Hulk-Buster armor. There was also Evan Peters coming back as Quicksilver in WandaVision only for viewers to find out he’s some actor named Ralph Bohner.

Is Emilia Clarke playing Abigail Brand or is this all a fake-out? This writer would say he’ll wait and see what happens, however, like Mephisto, he’ll keep guessing until there’s confirmation.
