Will Andrew Lincoln be back as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead’s final episode ever?
Andrew Lincoln is without a doubt the face of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
His Sheriff Rick Grimes quickly became one of the most popular characters on television when he woke from a coma in 2010 and found that the world was now overrun with the dead, and the character has made such an impression on viewers that it’s still hard to imagine the show without him in it – even though we have had three seasons of exactly that.
Lincoln left the show in the first half of its ninth season, with Rick being written out after sustaining an injury that almost killed him. The character was seemingly saved, with his future set to be dramatized in the upcoming Rick and Michonne spin-off series. Yes, Lincoln will reprise his role and Danai Gurira will also be back as Michonne.
The question is: Will he return in the series finale of the main show?

It’s likely that The Walking Dead‘s final episode will feature some kind of reference to Rick Grimes. The show shouldn’t bow out without acknowledging its long-running leading man, especially as the mystery surrounding Rick’s whereabouts has been an overarching presence in the seasons since his departure.
Whether or not that manifests in the form of an actual appearance remains to be seen. If the creative team wanted it to happen, there is a strong possibility that it could, because Lincoln himself has spoken about being open to return to the main show before, telling SFX Magazine that he still considers everyone on the show dear friends so he would “never say never”.
If Lincoln does appear, it will likely only be cameo appearance – perhaps one that could set up the Rick and Michonne spin-off. We know how important Rick is to the show’s legacy, but he isn’t involved in the current storyline, so don’t be surprised if the series wraps up with the last remaining original characters overcoming the odds, before then making time for a reference to Rick.
