Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will close out James Gunn’s trilogy of Marvel Cinematic Universe films. When does it come out in movie theaters?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s most outlandish superheroes made their small screen debut in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and it’s as gloriously Guardians as fans could have hoped.

But this won’t be the last we see of Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Mantis, Nebula, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Kraglin, as the crew are set to return to the silver screen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next year.

We haven’t had a Guardians film since the pre-Avengers showdown with Thanos in 2017’s Vol. 2 but director James Gunn has confirmed that this upcoming outing will be the last film in the trilogy. And since the special just reminded all of us how much we miss seeing the Guardians on our screens, here’s when we can expect the next chapter in their story.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 release date

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is released on May 5, 2023. It will serve as the second movie (and third overall title) in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy to a close.

The film will see Peter Quill, still heartbroken over the loss of Gamora at the hands of Thanos, attempt to rally the Guardians at a time when they must protect one of their own. Aside from that, much of the film’s plot details remain under wraps, but it will see the official MCU introduction of Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter.

The end of the Guardians story will be the end of an era, but it will be interesting to see if Marvel Studios plans on evolving the franchise with new characters or titles after this one. Either way, it’s going to be an emotional ride.
