Chris Hemsworth thinks the next Thor movie needs a new tone (and he’s right)

Chris Hemsworth says, if he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor will need a different tone. This is something that this writer couldn’t agree with more.
Thor has had more solo movies than any other Marvel Studios hero, with the God of Thunder appearing in four. The first two have been ranked average at best. Thor: Ragnarok is looked at as Chris Hemsworth’s best solo Marvel movie. It’s also one of the best projects Marvel Cinematic Universe has put out. Then there’s the most recent film starring the God of Thunder, Thor: Love and Thunder. A movie that a lot of fans didn’t enjoy.
Fans didn’t like the tone. Ragnarok was brighter and more fun, but certain elements of Love and Thunder like the screaming goats may have been over the top for some people. While it made tons of money, that isn’t the most important thing to think about. You have to think about how the negative reviews and criticism hit the creators involved and it looks like the project affected Chris Hemsworth as well.
During the Happy Sad Confused podcast (H/T: Comic Book Resources), Hemsworth commented, “I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone, everything, just for my own sanity.” He went on to say that, “Thor lost his mind that last one. He’s got to figure it out now.” It seemed like a nice way of saying he didn’t enjoy the Odinson being overly wacky. Thankfully, that’s an easy remedy: Change the tone of the film.
Why a fifth Thor movie would need a new tone
Thor shouldn’t be foolish. Sure, he’s known for being naïve to what mortals go through. That doesn’t mean he has to be careless while he’s saving people. He can be destructive, but aware of the things around him. He’d never make the mistake of destroying something precious to the beings of a planet. Not unless it was absolutely necessary.
What Thor did during that opening scene in Love and Thunder was unlike the character. Then, to make a joke made it worse. It was very unlike Thor. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to change things from the comic book source material, but switching too much can be a bad thing. Love and Thunder may have proved that. What’s worse is that the movie showed hints of greatness. Gorr is a perfect example of what should have been.
The one bright spot everyone seemed to agree on was Christian Bale. He truly brought the God Butcher to life, except for the fact he wasn’t given enough screen time to really work his magic. On top of that, the final battle between the Thors was watered down with children. Imagine if their final fight was taken more seriously. It could have become one of the most memorable moments in Marvel Studios history. Instead, Taika Waititi deviated too far from Jason Aaron’s source material. A mistake that could have cost Marvel another classic.
