House of the Dragon season 2 is not coming to HBO in 2022
Don’t be anticipating House of the Dragon season 2 on screens this year or in the foreseeable future.
The larger-than-life world of Game of Thrones got a little bit larger when House of the Dragon premiered on HBO and HBO Max earlier this year to acclaim from critics and high praise from fans – most of whom welcomed this trip back to the world of Westeros.
The show’s first season gripped the world for its 10-episode run from August through October, taking us back in time with the Targaryens to see how it all fell apart for the dragon-bearing family.
However, don’t be expecting House of the Dragon season 2 to burst onto screens this year. While a two-three month break might be normal for shows on network television, cable shows like House of the Dragon have less episodes and that results in a much shorter run – and therefore a much longer wait between seasons. That said, in this case, we know for a fact that it won’t be back this year because production on season 2 has not yet begun.
House of the Dragon season 2 release date predictions
House of the Dragon season 2 will film in Cáceres in spring 2023. It is expected to commence production in March 2023 and run through to June. Fans will know that the city often serves as the King’s Landing backdrop throughout the GoT universe, so it’s not surprising to hear that much of season 2’s location work will take place there.
There are also rumors that production on the show could begin as early as January. So, taking all of that into account, the sheer scope of anything that the world of Game of Thrones produces, and the fact that we’re talking about a TV series with the word “dragon” in its title, the earliest we could see House of the Dragon season 2 is probably 2024.
In fact, this is something that HBO and HBO Max chairman Casey Bloys discussed with Vulture after the first season’s conclusion, ruling out a 2023 release altogether.
With that in mind, an early 2024 release isn’t out of the equation but don’t be surprised if the HBO/HBO Max show is held until the middle of the year to ensure that the crew and creative team have enough time to allow the finished product to be as complete as it can be before it is sent out into the world.
