3. Stargirl season 2

When a TV series finds a great deal of success with its first season, it can either go to the well again to recreate that success or it can try something completely different. Stargirl chose to do the latter, while also ensuring that it never lost any of that quality that made its first season so darn enjoyable.

Season 2 was considerably darker than its predecessor, replacing the traditionally light comic book tone with an overarching sense of dread more akin to a horror movie. It wasn’t enough to alienate fans of the series, simply because there was a whimsicality in Stargirl‘s first season that could be bent towards the eerie if needed, and the thrilling blend was just right.

It all had to do with the arrival of the demon known as Eclipso, who fed on dark energy and made it his mission to turn the light within Courtney Whitmore into darkness. And the show successfully made its inherently hopeful tone feel that little bit more hopeless, both solidifying its villain as a force to be reckoned with, and making the trial that the JSA faced all the tougher to overcome.

The most impressive thing about the season is the fact that this was Stargirl‘s first season as a CW original series, and it never lost any of the cinematic qualities that made it stand out. And I hate myself for ranking it at the bottom of this list because it was, without question, the perfect sophomore outing.
