DC’s Stargirl aired its season 3 finale on The CW, bringing its run on the network to an end, but what does the future hold for the show? Is Stargirl season 4 happening?

DC’s Stargirl has enjoyed a successful on multiple services since its debut in 2020. Originally a DC Universe series, it found a new home on The CW after the DC service evolved into a comics only platform, but you can’t really call it new when the streaming original’s first season performed incredibly well on the network during its TV debut.

Since then, Stargirl has aired two critically-acclaimed seasons on The CW, both of which were among the network’s most-watched shows in their respective years’ calendars. It has enjoyed its success somewhat under-the-radar, with its cinematic visuals and expertly-choreographed fight going viral on social media from time-to-time whenever somebody spotlights it.

The show’s third season just completed its run on The CW, bringing the murder mystery arc to a close. But will Courtney Whitmore’s adventures continue?

Is Stargirl season 4 happening?

Unfortunately, Stargirl will not return for a fourth season. The CW opted against renewing the show in spite of its success and decided that its third season would be its last. Thus, its season 3 finale is also its series finale.

Stargirl did exactly what it was supposed to and performed well for the network in a time of change, but it’s that change that resulted in its untimely cancellation. The new owners of The CW, Nexstar, have a new vision for the network, and it involves more adult-driven content (and likely less superhero content), leaving Stargirl out in the cold.

Star Brec Bassinger revealed on an episode of the Wayne Ayers podcast that there had been talk of the show going to another streaming service for season 4, but it seems that did not come to pass, as the star described the months between May and October as an “emotional rollercoaster of ‘Yeah, I think it’s going to get picked up’ or, ‘Oh, no, we’re pitching to a different streaming service'”.

Fans had hoped HBO Max might have swooped in and saved the show considering it likely would have went there after the evolution of DC Universe if it hadn’t matched so well with The CW’s core shows. However, with Warner Bros. Discovery’s new leadership (and desire to build one connected DC Universe), that seems unlikely now.

The DC Comics series deserves better. That much is clear. And while fans continue to hope for Stargirl season 4, the best advice we can offer you is to keep streaming the first two seasons on HBO Max (and stream the third whenever it debuts).
