James Gunn says Superman could be the highest priority when it comes to the DCEU. Here’s why this is good news for DC Comics fans.

The state of DC Comics movies and shows has been in a weird space in recent months. It seems like something new is coming from Warner Bros. every week. Unfortunately, it isn’t all good news. Projects are getting canceled before, during, and after production. Performers are being rumored to get cast as other heroes (Jason Mamoa may go from Aquaman to Lobo). But, flying in like a hero to save the day is James Gunn.

James Gunn has more than proved himself in the superhero space. First, he took the Guardians of the Galaxy and made them a successful franchise for Marvel Studios – no one could have anticipated how much people would love them. Then, he wrote a much superior sequel to the Suicide Squad, made it a success, and then produced HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker. The latter being what this writer believes is the greatest project he’s done.

So, when James Gunn says that Superman is a huge priority, that should make DC Comics fans happy.

Superman should be the focus

Superman is the most important character in all of comics. He’s the benchmark of what it means to be a hero. An argument could be made that he’s no longer the best but he’s still in the top three or five. And, without him, comic books wouldn’t be as popular as they are now. It can be taken a step further. Christopher Reeve’s Superman proved that there’s a market for superhero movies. Fast forward 44 years later and Supes is still a draw at the box office. All of this shows that James Gunn is correct when he responded to a fan on Twitter and said that, “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

James Gunn may be known for making more adult superhero content on the DC side of things, but he also knows what the people want. The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special showed that he makes wholesome content without sacrificing what people love about the characters. It’s the most recent example of why James Gunn should be trusted with someone like Superman. A character that epitomizes wholesome.

This writer believes that the Man of Steel we see in the future will set the standard for the rest of the DCEU. Just like he is in the comics, Supes will be an inspiration. His movie will show the next group of creators what’s to be expected from DC Comics movies and shows. Hopefully Henry Cavill is in James Gunn’s plans. He’s clearly the best person suited for the job on the big screen. Also, unless you’re Batman, not everything has to be dark and brooding.
