Doom Patrol may be the most fun comic book TV show of all time. It has a healthy dose of cursing, random villains, and phrases like “Butt-pocalypse” (which becomes a major plot going forward). Somehow, within all of the jokes, the program manages to still have emotional moments.

For example, in the season 4 premiere, the team sees their dead selves. This could have been one big joke. Instead, it turned into a crucial moment that wasn’t ruined with too much levity. It also shows what each member’s story arcs would be this season.

In the next episode, the team voted out Rita (Elasti-Girl) as team leader. To add insult to injury, the team voted to make Rouge lead. Of course, Rita wasn’t happy. Nevertheless, it may have been the best decision. Too bad nothing goes the way it’s supposed to for them. Cliff and Rouge went on a mission on their own without telling anyone. Then, Jane and Cyborg did the same. Not a great start to the new regime.

Meanwhile, at the Ant Farm, the scientist and people in charge are working on making the butts weapons. Dr. Margaret Yu thought that the butts could be more than that. She was inevitably out voted and transferred. However, Dr. Yu escaped with a butt of her own. So, while the Doom Patrol thinks they have the last sentient butt, there’s still a threat out there.

Side note, this writer is going to enjoy mentioning weaponized, zombie, and carnivorous butts throughout the season.

The biggest takeaway came during Rouge and Cliff’s mission to kill zombie Darren. After Cyborg and his father found a way to let Cliff feel something in his finger, he didn’t want to touch anything until he got to hold his grandson. When Rouge forced Cliff to kill a zombie, he touched Darren’s brain. It ruined the experience Cliff longed for. To make it worse, the first thing he felt in years was death. Will this force Cliff to hesitate when his team is in danger? It would be a normal response to what happened. He may be a brain in a robot body, but he isn’t without emotions.

Then there’s Rouge. She felt bad for what she set in motion. Seeing Cliff hesitate to kill what they assumed was the last butt forced Rouge to think about her life. The former villain is starting to realize that she may need to change who she is. It also caused her to look back at how she deemed people as weapons. Her story could be the most intriguing in season 4 of Doom Patrol.
