Everyone is talking about Avatar 2’s lengthy runtime, but just how long is The Way of Water?

Here are we are, over a decade after James Cameron’s Avatar made history and became the highest-grossing movie of all time, about ready to embrace its sequel.

Yes, Avatar: The Way of Water is over 10 years in the making and to say it has a lot of pressure on its shoulders would be a major understatement. Not only has the cinematic landscape changed significantly since the first film’s release (hello, Marvel), the film’s excessive budget means that it will need to be one of the top five or six highest-grossing movies of all time to be considered a success. So, yeah, no pressure.

Avatar was a cinematic experience, so you can bet its successor will be too. There has already been a lot of discussion about how long the audiences will be spending in the movie theater, so if you plan on joining them, here’s how long the film really is.

How long is Avatar 2: The Way of Water?

Avatar 2: The Way of Water has a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes (or 192 minutes). That’s 30 minutes longer than the first Avatar, meaning that even those accustomed to long movies will have quite the extended period in front of the big screen.

Yes, bathroom breaks might be necessary. In fact, director James Cameron encourages them, telling The Hollywood Reporter that fans can go “Any time they want” as they can see the scenes that they missed “when they come see it again”.

Cameron is known for blockbusters that have a longer runtime, with Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘s extended cut having a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, and both Titanic and Avatar going over three hours.
