The Walking Dead

AMC’s nail-biting zombie drama ended its historic run in November with a series finale that was very emotional. The Walking Dead has been a regular presence as part of the TV schedule for over a decade and it’s going to be strange to go into a new year without it on – the first year without TWD since 2009!

However, there is a silver lining for TWD fans. All good things must come to an end, but right now that’s only specific to the show itself, for the TWD Universe will grow exponentially in 2023. Three new spinoff TV shows, The Walking Dead: Dead CityDaryl Dixon, and an untitled spinoff focusing on Rick Grimes and Michonne, will bring many of the show’s beloved characters back to the screen. And let’s not forget that long-running spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead will also be back for its eighth season.

House of the Dragon

It’s hard to say who this year belonged to in terms of TV shows. Not because there were many options – make no mistake about it, there were only two – but because the shows willing to claim that title were so dominant. One of them was House of the Dragon, and it debuted with such an emphatic arrival that it single-handedly reminded us all overnight that the Game of Thrones saga was alive and well.

The GoT prequel was so well-received that it was renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere episode. Unfortunately, that second season won’t be premiering this coming year. With production set to begin this coming summer, a return in 2023 already seemed unlikely, but HBO and HBO Max chairman Casey Bloys confirmed that the earliest we could hope for new episodes would be 2024.
