DC Comics makes good on their promise: The Justice League is dead
By Mark Lynch
With DC Comics Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths over, it’s time for Amanda Waller to make her next move.
DC Comics‘ crossover event Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths seemed to drag a bit. Thankfully, it ended in spectacular fashion.
Black Adam gave up most of his powers to the fighting heroes so they could defeat their enemies. Meanwhile, Dick Grayson (Nightwing) was in the middle of an internal struggle against the Darkness. Of course Nightwing won. There aren’t many people with the positive attitude and willpower that he has. After everything was said and done, you’d think things would go back to normal. Unfortunately, they didn’t.
While talking to Nightwing, Batman says that the Justice League no longer exists. The team had a talk and decided that the world needs more than new League members or an updated roster. It needs a new legacy and a future. The team agreed that if anyone was going to lead heroes into the future, it had to be Nightwing. Dick said he’d have to think about it. Before they could talk further, duty called. Nevertheless, the Justice League as we know it is no more.
The void left allowed Amanda Waller to make a play for something bold. She went to a mysterious cabal and asked permission to lock up anyone with superpowers. Heroes and villains alike. The cabal denied her request. Instead, they had something more sinister in mind. They told Waller to eradicate every metahuman in the world. Of course, Waller was happy. With Waller’s Suicide Squad behind her, she will try and kill anyone with superpowers in 2023.
What’s coming for DC Comics in 2023?
Of course, we can assume that the Justice League we know will return at some point. There’s no way that DC Comics will keep them gone too long. However, this writer hopes it doesn’t happen for a while. In comic books, the familiar can sometimes get boring. It’s one of the reasons why Luke Cage’s New Avengers was so fun, because it wasn’t the same team we’re used to seeing. Nightwing could bring that kind of feeling to his new team.
Dick Grayson is known for being a Titan and Bat-Family member. Having him on or leading the League is a great idea. He’ll bring in new team members, perhaps like Superman (Jon Kent), Donna Troy, Tim Fox (Batman), and probably Barbara Gordon to be Oracle. Since the idea is for the League to have different ideals, this roster would certainly do it. Hopefully they’ll have what it takes to protect their peers from Amanda Waller and the unnamed DC Comics event.
Amanda Waller’s team doesn’t look like a group that can take out Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. However, that’s not the case. Waller wouldn’t put her faith in people she thought would fail. Especially with such an important mission. So far, this writer can only tell you that Peacemaker and a female version of him are on the team. The other two people with her are unidentifiable. One of them looks like a Batman/Superman hybrid with an electrical fist wearing Lex Luthor’s armor. A perfect combo to take out the Justice League. The other looks like one of the reanimen from Invincible. Who knows. Maybe Invincible will end up in the DC Comics universe? Can we rule anything out in comic books?
Whoever is on this roster, metahumans should be scared. Amanda Waller is already one of the best strategic minds in the world. Now she’ll have the backing of powerful people. That comes with access to technology that could take down The Flash and the Green Lanterns. Whatever this event is, it could end up being the must read comic book series of 2023.
Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more on that.
