6. Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan started her journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a superfan of Captain Marvel but by the end of her six episode debut, she had become her own hero (and we were all superfans of hers). The much-anticipated Ms. Marvel series proved to be worth the extensive wait fans endured (after it was delayed multiple times), opening the MCU up to new threats and dimensions through its villains The Clandestines.

Its greatest attribute was the youthful approach that it took as it set itself apart from other MCU properties, and that was in no small part thanks to star Iman Vellani, who was spectacular in her first major on-screen role.

We don’t yet know if Ms. Marvel will return for a second season, but we do know that it will be welcomed back with open arms if it does.

5. Peacemaker

Viewers didn’t know what to expect with Peacemaker ahead of its series premiere, because the John Cena character wasn’t exactly a fan-favorite in The Suicide Squad. And yet that worked completely in its favor, because the DCEU’s first ever TV series gave us everything and then some to, somehow, someway, make us care about Christopher Smith.

It’s witty, it’s outlandish, it’s… surprisingly heartfelt, Peacemaker is the sum of its amazing parts that all contribute to this year’s most outlandish comic book show. John Cena is excellent in the title role, but he’s supported by an equally impressive supporting cast, with the standout being Freddie Stroma’s wickedly funny (and unusually sincere) Vigilante.

It goes without saying that Peacemaker is an acquired taste. It won’t be for everyone and not every DCEU project needs to be like it. But if every DCEU project successfully delivers on all fronts in the way that this one did, the DC Universe is in safe hands with James Gunn.
