2. Heartstopper

The biggest surprise of 2022, Heartstopper told the story of two high school best friends, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, who quickly find out that there is more to their bond than just friendship, and it was nothing short of joyous throughout the entirety of its eight-episode run.

The show changed the world, dominated the TV conversation for months, and made stars out of Kit Connor and Joe Locke. And it accomplished all of this with good reason, for this little light-hearted show is a beacon of hope for LGBTQ+ teenagers looking for representation on-screen.

It’s also one of the most heartwarming and easy-watching TV shows of the year and to say it did justice to Alice Oseman’s equally-beautiful comic would be an understatement.

1. DC’s Stargirl

Stargirl returned to screens for its third season this year and delivered a season that could very well deserve the honor of being called its best season. Centred on a murder mystery in Blue Valley, season 3 saw Courtney Whitmore and the Justice Society of America attempt to track down the culprit all while pointing fingers and one another and their enemies – many of whom were trying to reform.

From the return to Starman to the all of the unique “frenemies” dynamics, Stargirl had a lot to juggle and it never once buckled under the pressure, once again proving why it was the premiere superhero show on television.

Its cancellation by The CW is unforgivable but it bowed out like it lived its life: With triumph, heart, and class. We love you, Stargirl.
