Michael Rosenbaum expresses interest in reprising his role as Lex Luthor
Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum wants to return to his signature role as the bald menace in James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s DCU.
According to Comicbook.com, Michael Rosenbaum recently responded to a fan who proposed the idea of Michael Rooker becoming the DCU’s new Lex Luthor. In doing so, the actor not only reminded everyone he also played the Man of Steel’s archenemy in the longest-running WB/CW series to date, Smallville, but that he’d be open to returning to reprise the role in the future!
The Smallville actor seemed to suggest he was hoping to be in the running to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, having played the villain for seven years on the coming-of-age, superhero drama series that ran for ten seasons.
“I hope I’d be in the running. I mean I did play him for seven years. Unless you guys would have a problem with that,” Rosenbaum teased.
This came after co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios, James Gunn, stated his plans for another Superman reboot focused on a younger version of the character that will no longer star Henry Cavill. It is a film Gunn is currently in the middle of writing that will follow Clark Kent living in Metropolis during the early years whilst employed at The Daily Planet, although it is not an origin story. No director has been attached.
Will Michael Rosenbaum return as Lex Luthor?
This is not the first time Michel Rosenbaum expressed interest to play Lex Luthor again. Before the role went to Jesse Eisenberg in the 2016 follow-up motion picture, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, there were fan castings across the Internet of Bryan Cranston being in consideration for the role of Lex. Cranston quickly denied claims of being considered for the role, while Rosenbaum joked about Cranston staying in his lane while hinting at his interest in the role.
"“Can the Superman fans out there spread the word that there’s really no other choice? Let Cranston stick to meth. Thanks.”"
Rosenbaum brought gravitas to the role of Lex Luther and mam fans would possibly like to revisit a Gunn-inspired DCU project. Sadly, it’s likely the role will go to a new actor given Gunn’s desire to launch a new franchise, though we’ve learned to never say never.
