Titans: How Starfire’s leadership role encapsulate her journey in season 4
Starfire is tested even further as a leader in the fourth season of Titans after a new destiny presented itself amid the rise of Brother Blood. Spoilers ahead…
Before the premiere of Titans season 4, as per TVLine, the showrunner of the HBO Max series, Greg Walker, responded to the outlet’s Q&A regarding the characters Kory Anders/Starfire (Mame-Anna Diop) and Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites). They also mentioned Starfire’s rising status as a leader of the Titans.
Prior to the fourth season of Titans, Starfire’s role was reduced before and after the disbandment of the team following the defeat of Deathstroke and the rescue of Gar Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) and Conner Kent/Superboy (Joshua Orpin). Starfire had to overcome not only her cruel sister Komand’r/Blackfire who killed their parents but her destiny to rule the thrown on her home world of Tamaran.
Starfire eventually reconciled her differences with Blackfire following the death of Jason Todd during her teammate’s relocation to Gotham. Starfire during her battles with Todd’s Red Hood persona and his menacing alliance with Scarecrow, consorted with Dick frequently on the field during investigations, especially following the murder of Hawk and the resignation of Dove. Often a shoulder for Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft) to lean on, Kory also supports Gar.
Starfire’s place in Titans season 4
After leaving Gotham, Dick becomes a lot more trusting of Kory to co-lead the Titans, but the former Robin has put aside his issues with his stepfather, Bruce Wayne, and becomes more involved with Kory. Plus Kory is a lot more focused this time. Now she has put her affairs with Tamaran to rest… or so it seems.
Following the mysterious death of Lex Luthor by inexplicable means plus cryptic and strange murders in Metropolis, Kory works with Dick regularly on the field and in battle as their superhero identities. Starfire becomes more active in her leadership after the Titans’ subsequent confrontation with Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente).
What were the Titans showrunner’s thoughts on Starfire?
Greg Walker, the showrunner and executive producer of Titans, discussed Dick’s reformation and leadership of the new Titans, which helped get him to a place of being ready to co-lead the team. As Walker told TVLine:
"“Dick’s issues with Bruce were so profound that they often blocked off to people. He still had humanity – and that’s really why we like Dick Grayson, and how he’s different from Robin in a lot of ways – but he wasn’t quite yet ready to lead the team in a way that allowed for him to co-lead.”"
Referring to what Kory has to face this season and how their working relationship has an impact on the narrative, including how she is going to be “put through the wringer” like the rest of the team, Walker stated about Dick and Kory as a two-hander, “It’s the right time for it.”
