Co-CEO and chairman of DC Studios, James Gunn, has debunked an article that Battinson will roll into the DCU; however, it could work if done correctly.

On Dec. 14, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, debunked the possibility of Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s Batman being consolidated within the new DCU. This was before it was announced by the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker that Henry Cavill will not return to the role of Superman in a new movie focusing on the Man of Steel will be in his younger days.

Assuming that the new Superman reboot takes place when Clark Kent has already moved from Smallville to Metropolis and become Superman and it seems likely the film could introduce a Clark who is trying to find his place in the world and better navigate his double life as an investigative reporter for the Daily Planet.

Depending on whenThe Batman sequel comes out, a Superman who is not quite established in the world could line up nicely with The Dark Knight in the Battinson universe.

Matt Reeves’ approach to The Batman is not just grounded

If you read the review of The Batman, one of the main topics discussed was the film’s atmospheric tone which is comparable to horror from the late Alfred Hitchcock. One of the misconceptions of Reeve’s direction of the film is that it is merely just another “grounded take” on The Bat. This is not entirely true.

Aside from its noir angle, more eschewed mystery, and the detective aspect of the character, the genre film also had inspiration from pulp fiction drawn from the 30s and 40s.

All they have to do is follow the framework of what Paul Dini had done with Batman: The Animated Series and blend some of the mature writing and thematic complexity of that series, including some of the outlandish elements such as Mr. Freeze and Clayface, and make them more plausible as Reeves did with the deleted scene for Barry Keoghan’s Joker.

If you were to frame the meta-humans Battinson’s rendition of the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery as übermensch – a rudimentary form of the greater form of man – as opposed to Superman’s rogues who are a foil to what the Last Son of Krypton can represent for mankind. With that, you have a tone that matches the rest of the DCU. The process of world-building has to be gradual and elaborate, so setting the upcoming Superman film in the newly established universe created by Matt Reeves seems like a smart move.
