The major change that sets Daredevil: Born Again apart from the Netflix series
By Mark Lynch
Charlie Cox says Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again will have a focus on courtroom drama and law. Is this a good thing? This writer says yes.
Charlie Cox’s portrayal of Matt Murdock on Netflix’s Daredevil wasn’t just a near perfect representation of the comic book character, the whole show was flawless. With all of the attention to detail, great villains, and superb acting, it’s no wonder Daredevil: Born Again is a highly anticipated show. Especially since he’s one of the few characters that fans wanted to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Marvel’s Netflix franchise.
With the Disney Plus show starring the Man Without Fear coming in 2024, fans are anticipating updates in the coming months. For example, Charlie Cox said a couple of things about the future of his character. First, Cox said in an earlier interview with i, “I don’t think anyone should read into the name as to the kind of stories that we’re going to tell.” If you’re a comic book fan, you know that’s not a big deal. There are tons of classic Daredevil stories that can be adapted to the new format.
As far as other news goes in regards to the show’s format, perhaps the most interesting reveal came from Charlie Cox’s interview with GQ, in which he revealed a change in Born Again when compared to the previous Daredevil. He said:
"“I think because of the number of episodes they’ve committed to, there’ll be a heavy influence of courtroom stuff — Matt Murdoch the lawyer in the new show,”"
Fans anticipating Daredevil: Born Again may have read this quote and gotten concerned about D.D.’s Disney Plus debut. This writer is here to tell you that this is actually good news.
Embrace a Daredevil courtroom drama
There are a few things to note when thinking about Daredevil: Born Again being a courtroom drama. First, and this is the most important. The show will be 18 episodes. In the new era of Marvel/Disney, no show on Disney Plus has thus far had that many episodes in one season. If the episode count remains, Daredevil: Born Again will have to be about more than Matt punching people and making use of his heightened senses. And as streaming shows tend to steer clear of the procedural format, we could see Matt Murdock following a particular case throughout the season. Hopefully it will follow Wilson Fisk.
Second, Cox told GQ that he is “heavily focused on researching that area of this character and his life” and that it “was one of the areas we didn’t do a huge amount [of] exploration around before.” This kind of commitment will help Daredevil’s new show be a success. Attention to detail is never a bad thing. Especially in a world with dozens of courtroom dramas available to watch.
Lastly, we (fans of the MCU) should embrace the new. Everything can’t be Iron Man, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If the projects remain the same, people will get bored. Predictability was already becoming a flaw in the MCU. It’s why this writer applauds the moves made in Phase 4. Some of the attempts were successes while others weren’t. Now, the creative team can go back to the drawing board and fix what some may call mistakes.
If new things weren’t tried, there wouldn’t be a WandaVision, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, or Werewolf by Night. All successes for Marvel and Disney. We should embrace what Marvel is doing and wait until Daredevil: Born Again debuts before judging.
Stay tuned for more news as it comes out.
