Is The Walking Dead season 12 happening?
TWD’s eleventh season has come to an end, but what does the future hold for the franchise? Will The Walking Dead season 12 happen?
It’s difficult to remember a time when The Walking Dead wasn’t on TV.
The zombie series is based on the comic series of the same name, and it premiered on AMC back in 2010. Andrew Lincoln starred as Rick Grimes, a sheriff who wakes from a coma after getting shot, only to discover that the world has gone to hell, with the living outnumbered by the dead.
Over the course of the show’s run, the cast both expanded and downsized as the survivors went up against the walkers (and multiple human threats) in the hopes of making it out of the apocalypse alive. And viewers just couldn’t get enough (hence the show’s longevity).
The show’s eleventh season aired on AMC across a year-long period, with its finale airing in November. Now, Netflix subscribers in the US get to experience that nail-biting adventure for themselves as season 11 has arrived on the streamer. But with the Commonwealth story concluded, what does the future hold for The Walking Dead?
Is The Walking Dead season 12 happening?
Unfortunately, The Walking Dead season 12 is not going to happen. It was officially confirmed back in 2020 that the eleventh season would be its final season, but additional episodes were ordered in order to ensure it got the chance to go out in a big way with a bumper-length 24-episode season.
AMC did not cancel the show. This was just one of those decisions that all long-running shows have to face at some time, and it seems that all of those involved in creating The Walking Dead felt that it would be best for the show to bow out strong in season 11 rather than go on for too much longer.
The Walking Dead future spinoffs
Fear not! Even though The Walking Dead season 12 isn’t happening, we have not seen the last of all of the show’s characters, as there are multiple spin-offs in development.
The first, The Walking Dead: Dead City, will see Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) make their way to New York City and it premieres in April 2023. The next will take Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) to France (it was originally set to star Melissa McBride’s Carol too but that is unfortunately no longer the case). And the third, which was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July, will see the returns of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira in a six-part series set to bring back Rick Grimes and Michonne.
If that’s not enough for you, you can also check out the show’s ongoing spin-offs Fear The Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead (as well as the two-season miniseries The Walking Dead: World Beyond).
The Walking Dead might be over, but the TWD Universe will live on in a big way.
