When does Hershel die in The Walking Dead?
Hershel Greene was one of The Walking Dead’s most popular characters until his untimely death in one of the show’s most tense episodes.
Hershel Greene made an indelible impression on The Walking Dead viewers throughout his time on the legendary AMC show. A man of honor in every way, he became a moral compass for many of the survivors in the zombie apocalypse that had ravaged through Atlanta and the world, forming a strong bond with Rick Grimes in the process.
All of that ensured he became a fan-favorite character as the late, great Scott Wilson’s endearing performance earned him a place in the hearts and minds of people all over the world.
Hershel’s legacy continues to live on in The Walking Dead Universe even though the character was killed off long ago. If you haven’t seen that episode or stopped watching the show, here’s when the beloved character met his unfortunate end.
When does Hershel Greene die in The Walking Dead?
Hershel dies in The Walking Dead season 4, falling victim to the Governor’s bloody return after he and Michonne are kidnapped by the villain. This took place in the season 4 midseason finale, titled “Too Far Gone”, in which the Governor attempts to overthrow the prison by using the pair as leverage.
A big part of Hershel’s final arc on the show was making his fellow survivors see that mankind can come back from the brink of the apocalypse, and that their humanity is what separates them from the dead. This is a lesson that Rick learned as he attempted to appeal to the Governor’s better nature, offering him help and vowing to end their war. It was a proud moment for Hershel, who gave his friend one beautiful final smile before the Governor cruelly used Michonne’s sword to decapitate Hershel.
In the midseason premiere “After”, Michonne then uses her sword to gently put the reanimated head of Hershel to sleep.
It goes without saying that Hershel’s death was one of the show’s most heartbreaking moments, but the fact that fans loved him so much, and continued to miss his presence on the show until its conclusion in season 11, is a testament to Scott Wilson’s wonderful performance.
