In this theoretical op-ed, we explain who Cobalt Blue is and how likely the villain is set to appear in The Flash’s ninth and final season.

While there have been rumors about who the Big Bad is of The Flash Season 9, in this feature article is an in-depth explanation as to who the long-lost brother of the Fastest Man Alive is.

Cobalt Blue is the illegitimate brother of our second Flash (Barry Allen) in the comics. Raised by his adoptive parents of Hugo and Charlene Thawne, he is the biological son of Henry and Nora Allen. Becoming Malcolm Thawne, he went to the Thawnes who had a reputation as con artists.

Malcolm first appeared in Speed Force No.1 created by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn published during the fall of ’97 by DC Comics. Dr. Gilmore to escape malpractice due to alcoholism by accidentally harming the baby that belonged to Charlene, the doctor switched one of the twins of Nora that would grow up to become Malcolm. Growing up, due to not being a Thawne, Malcolm lacked the genetic trait to tap into a mysterious Blue Flame to heal people among other abilities.

His family taunted Malcolm due to his lacking this trait and eventually discovered he was adopted. Malcolm as an adult often got in trouble with the law. When there came a time to confront his brother, Barry, even witnessing the accident that made him become The Flash, his envy and hatred over how much of a better Barry had compared to him drove Malcolm to become the supervillain Cobalt Blue.

Why Cobalt Blue being the last Big Bad is a great idea on The Flash

Cobalt Blue to comic fans is a cult favorite amongst The Flash community ever since the first season of The Flash ended due to Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) and his connection to his future descendant, Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash. After subsequent seasons featuring the Fastest Man Alive, comic fans were hoping for the appearance of Cobalt Blue.

With The Flash about to come to a close in a thirteen-episode season after nine years, this would be ample opportunity to use this villain for the ninth and final season as being an equalizer of sorts: Cobalt Blue being the final boss is a good way of making the whole series come full circle. Of course, there are many loose ends to tie up with in more than a dozen episodes, some of which involve the Reverse-Flash.

Also, it has been a while since a Non-Speedster villain was a Big Bad for a while Season 6 with Bloodwork and Mirror Monarch being the main baddies of that season. In addition, the character possesses attain unique abilities that can match speedsters through access to the Blue Flame.

With the aid of his adoptive grandmother, Malcolm was able to not only acquire exceptional abilities through whichever the heart desired to feed on passion: in this case hatred for Barry poured into a talisman on his chest.

Adopting the identity and costume of Cobalt Blue, Malcolm can do more feats than healing. He can project the flame out of his body and his sword, create objects out of flame, and can steal objects including another’s superpower through channeling this flame, therefore stealing a conduit of the Speed Forces of their speed.

Is Rick Cosnett going to appear as Cobalt Blue in The Flash season 9?

The last we saw of Rick Cosnett as Eddie Thawne was in season 8 where he appeared as a guest star capacity during a flashback in 2014 and whilst appearing as a manifestation of Iris West-Allen’s grief.

In Season 9, the current theme is old faces making a return with Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, and Keiynan Lonsdale reprising their roles. The possibilities could be endless despite it not being confirmed that we would even be betting on this character.

Before this writer goes on, what is apparent is Captain Boomerang II, The Rogues, and Red Death are included in The Flash. According to the synopsis for Season 9, there is a small detail of a “powerful new threat.” So whether or not this is the villain The CW is referring to is uncertain.

Cosnett is not exactly busy, aside from a miniseries in post-production for Apple TV+ and an upcoming independent film called Stop and Smell the Roses, unless there is something private or a secret project unrevealed to the public, Cosnett could possibly appear in a recurring capacity.
