Fans of the video game knew going into The Last of Us that things wouldn’t run smoothly for all of the characters – or, well, any of the characters. Maybe that knowledge is a gift that first-time viewers who didn’t play the game simply wouldn’t have, or maybe it’s a curse.

Either way, and regardless of your Last of Us knowledge, very little could have prepared you for the emotional rollercoaster that was the series premiere of HBO’s new zombie drama. Episode 1, titled “When You’re Lost In The Darkness”, was exactly what many expected, but more than they all could take.

Who dies in The Last of Us episode 1?

The first episode of The Last of Us opened with the origins of the dystopian world that would make itself at home throughout the remainder of the series. Before it all went down, we met Sarah Miller, the daughter of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and niece of Tommy (Gabriel Luna).

When the world went to hell, Joel attempted to get his daughter and his brother to safety. Unfortunately, that was impossible, as the outbreak of the infection that turned people into the living dead had already gripped Austin, leaving them with no way out.

After escaping from one of the deadly undead, Joel and Sarah ran into a soldier who told them to stay where they are. He then received orders that it seemed even he didn’t want to follow. But he did follow them, shooting at Joel and Sarah. The force of a bullet that scathes past Joel forces him and Sarah to the ground. The soldier is shot and killed by Tommy, but just as Joel realizes that the bullet didn’t hit him, he notices his daughter in pain.

Having been shot in the abdomen, Sarah dies in Joel’s arms in a truly heartbreaking moments. We only had Sarah on our screens for a short time, but she quickly became a lovable part of the show, making her quick death that much more tragic.

As fans of the video game know, this starts Joel’s journey towards crossing paths with Ellie and setting up the central premise of The Last of Us.
