James Gunn has fans thinking of Superman in the DCU once again after tweeting a photo of him reading All-Star Superman

For those who don’t have Twitter, you may not have known about James Gunn’s latest tweet. The co-head of DC Studios and the man behind the upcoming Superman film for the DC Universe piqued fans’ curiosity on Twitter by posting a picture of himself reading the iconic comic book series, All-Star Superman.

The Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely series, which ran from 2005 to 2008, is widely considered one of the best Superman storylines of all time, following the Man of Steel as he discovers he is dying from overexposure to the sun and completes his final “Twelve Labors” before ultimately saving the earth and becoming a solar being.

Naturally, fans were quick to speculate that Gunn’s tweet was a hint that he would be adapting All-Star Superman into his upcoming Superman film. However, it’s important to remember that this is not likely the case. While Gunn has stated that he is a big fan of the comic book series, he has not confirmed that he will be adapting it into his film. In fact, it’s important to remember that Superman has a long way to go in Gunn’s DCU before he reaches the point in his story where he faces his last days on Earth.

Gunn hasn’t shied away from telling fans that his Superman film is set to follow a younger version of Clark Kent during his early days at the Daily Planet. Of course, Gunn will introduce a new actor to take on the iconic role, much to the disappointment of Henry Cavill Superman’s fans. With casting for the film not yet underway, it’s unclear what direction the story will take. However, fans can rest assured that Gunn is a talented storyteller who knows how to tell a great Superman story.

One great story Gunn could adopt is Superman: For Tomorrow. The story deals with Superman having to confront a crisis that causes a large number of people to disappear without a trace, and he has to find a way to bring them back. This story would be great for a movie because it would give Superman a more personal stakes and a more emotional arc.

Could All-Star Superman be adapted in the DC Universe?

Sure Gunn could be a fan, who wanted us to know he was psyched about reading All-Star Superman. Or it could be something more. All-Star Superman could serve as a baseline ending to establish what he wants from his version of Superman before he gets to that point. It’s a smart strategy to know the end journey for a character he’s continuing to build. All-Star Superman is a deep, character-driven story that sees Superman make the ultimate sacrifice.

It’s also worth noting that All-Star Superman has already been adapted into an animated film in 2011, by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, which received mixed reviews. While some considered it among DC Animation’s best adaptations, others criticized the alterations to the story, particularly the cutting of several sequences from the original comic.

In short, while it’s exciting to see James Gunn reading All-Star Superman, fans shouldn’t get too hyped about the possibility of the comic being adapted into a movie just yet. The future of Superman in the DC Universe is still a mystery, and it’s important to wait for Gunn and Peter Safran to announce their plans for the former DCEU before getting too excited about an adaptation.
