What could Greg Berlanti’s new Warner Bros. deal mean for DC TV?
The film and TV producer with a record-breaking amount of greenlit shows has signed a mega deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. But what does it mean for DC TV?
As revealed by Deadline, the ever so diligent film and television writer/producer Greg Berlanti has signed a new four-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group. This means his production company, Berlanti Productions, will remain at the studio until 2027.
According to sources close to Deadline, that this contract is structured differently from his previous one with the WBTV Group. Plus it can easily fall within a nine figure range.
Also, whereas previously it was the WBTV Group buying out the Berlanti Prods. banner and its backend of shows, this new deal will be more of a joint venture with Berlanti earning a big “W” from his end. However, could this deal mean more or less DC from his production company?
Could Greg Berlanti’s new deal bring more DC TV to screens?
Ever since the merger with Discovery, things have not looked good for scripted content across all divisions of Warner Bros – from the cancellation of multiple DC properties to the sale of its 50% stake at The CW over to Nexstar (which resulted in more culling of Warner and DC programming). Multiple Berlanti-produced shows were cancelled, spelling the end of the Arrowverse as we knew it.
The last remaining shows in the Arrowverse are The Flash, which ends its run this year, and Superman & Lois (which is only loosely tied to the Arrowverse after it was revealed that it was set on another Earth), with the potential of the latter show spinning into another shared universe with Justice U potentially on the cards. With that series, headlined by David Ramsey if it is picked up, awaiting its fate and Gotham Knights right around the corner, the state of programming with DC’s own IP seem dire.
That will change on the cinematic side of things in the future, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios, and the DC Universe spawning more movies and TV shows that share continuity. However, what does the future of DCTV look like?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC fare will not be the focus of Greg Berlanti’s new deal with Warner Bros. That suggests we’re moving away from the era of superhero programming that Berlanti started. Whether or not the remaining properties in Superman and Lois, Gotham Knights and potentially Justice U live on a CW that is increasingly distancing itself from its legendary superhero era remains to be seen.
For now, the DC TV shows he started (well the ones that remain at least) will be carrying on, but it doesn’t look like he will be adding to his library of comic book programming in the near-future.
