Peacemaker season 2 ‘put on hold’ as James Gunn focuses on Superman

As part of the new vision for DC, it has been announced that Peacemaker season 2 has been put on hold as James Gunn focuses on Superman instead. 

After months of uncertainty, DC Studios Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have unveiled their plans for the first 10 film and television projects under the new DC banner they’ll lead across film, television, and animation.

The slate includes a handful of exciting new projects featuring some of the biggest characters in the DC Comics Universe including the Man of Steel and Caped Crusader. Among the biggest titles announced was the confirmation of Superman: Legacy, a new Superman film written by Gunn which will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

The project is one that Gunn is set to prioritize in his new role, which will result in other projects taking a bit of a back seat. Among the titles directly impacted by Gunn’s focus on  Superman: Legacy is the second season of Peacemaker which seems to have been put on hold and will not be proceeding as part of the upcoming first wave of projects from Gunn and Safran.

Is Peacemaker season 2 happening?

Although Peacemaker was renewed for a second season back in February 2022 following the success of the show’s first season, it seems DC has pressed pause on the show’s return — at least for the moment. In announcing the new DC Slate, it was announced that James Gunn is shifting his focus to the studios’ Superman project which will result in Peacemaker season 2 being put on hold for the moment.

Instead of streamlining a second season of Peacemaker, DC instead will look to continue the stories told in the show via the newly announced Viola Davis-led series Waller. As reported by Variety, Gunn has revealed that “team ‘Peacemaker will appear alongside Davis as a ‘continuation’ of that show.”

Has Peacemaker been canceled?

At this time, Peacemaker has not been canceled nor has its second season renewal been reversed by DC or HBO Max. However, the second season of the John Cena-led series has been “put on hold” as its creator James Gunn focuses on the studio’s upcoming Superman film and other projects connected to his new role as Co-Chairmen and CEO.

The decision to put Peacemaker season 2 on hold does call the show’s future into question and there is a chance the show’s second season could be scrapped entirely in the future. At the moment, though, the plan simply seems to prioritize other projects at the moment including Waller which will see some crossover with the Peacemaker cast expected to crossover into the new series.
