Is Avatar 2 coming to Disney Plus in February 2023?

Avatar 2: The Way of Water may just be the biggest movie of the decade. But will it get the chance to break Disney Plus records this month as well?

Avatar 2 is now the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time. The phenomenon that many people underestimated has continued to thrill audiences since its December release in theaters around the world and it is showing no signs of slowing down, as it continues to smash box office record after box office record.

Only two movies stand between it matching the heights of its predecessor, Avatar, and those are Titanic (another James Cameron movie) and Avengers: Endgame. Whether or not it can best those two (or its No. 1 spot-holding predecessor) remain to be seen, but The Way of Water has certainly been a wave of dominance since it first came out.

Many people have not seen it yet, and those viewers may be waiting to check it out on Disney Plus. If you’re hoping for it to arrive on the streaming service this month, though, you’ll probably be sad to learn that won’t be happening. While the end of the month could have been a real possibility at one point, Disney Plus confirmed its February listings, and Avatar 2 is unfortunately not among them.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water Disney Plus release date predictions

As we said, Avatar: The Way of Water is still enjoying immense success at the box office almost two months after its theatrical release. That success is seeing it break record after record, and now it’s just three movies away from the all-time top spot. It’s not clear yet if it will beat Avatar‘s gross just yet, but you can bet that Disney will be happy for it to try.

Taking the film’s successful box office run into account, it’s quite possible that Disney will keep it off Disney Plus for quite some time so that people will continue to venture out into movie theaters to see it. While early March is still a feasible possibility for its Disney Plus release window, it wouldn’t be too surprising if the film was held for a little longer to perhaps late March or April.

That’s just a prediction, though, so the best course of action is to wait for an official confirmation from Disney. If its arrival is coming in March, an official announcement will likely be made at the end of February when next month’s listings are confirmed – and the same goes for the end of March if it’s April. Its arrival on the service won’t be a surprise; when it comes, it will be a huge event.

As Hollywood finds its groove again after the pandemic, there is less of a need to release movies on streaming within that strict 45 – 70 day theatrical release window. As seen with the Marvel Studios movies, it’s still used as a rough indicator to predict when the films might arrive on Disney Plus, but Avatar 2 might be the first major example were it isn’t strictly adhered to. We’ll have to wait and see.
