DC’s Cinematic refresh aims for a new unified multiverse
DC’s new slate of films and shows under James Gunn and Peter Safran have been unveiled, and it looks to finally unite a multiverse divided.
A new era of DC storytelling will commence in 2025 when Superman: Legacy hits theaters. It will be the start of a new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) that promises to be a lot more united than the past decade of films and shows.
Over 10 projects from film and television were announced for this new universe. There will also be sequels to The Batman and Joker that are officially considered DC Elseworlds.
Everything DC going forward will be under the guidance of Gunn and Safran.
There was a quote from Gunn that perfectly described what DC was doing the past 10 years.
"They were giving out IP to creatives who smiled at the people in charge, and then the people in charge didn’t even have real power."
That statement from him perfectly describes the last 10 years of how the brand was handled. Their chaotic approach of developing projects made everything feel so disjointed leading to a divided fanbase.
WB and DC throughout the DCEU’s decade run has been through so many leadership changes and mergers, that it would require an actual graph to make sense of what’s happened to the company.
The highs of the DCEU were wonderful while the lows are embarrassing when compared to its direct competitor.
Give credit where credit is due when it came to the DCEU’s wild experimentation and variety. Unfortunately a lot of that came from its management and plans always changing, resulting in them playing fast and loose with the IP.
In this new era, it seems like that variety will still continue albeit in a much more organized fashion.
What’s also shocking about this news of the upcoming slate is that in the current culture of scoopers, none of it got leaked.
Gunn and Safran keeping a lid on these projects until the press event is quite astounding when there were so many things that got announced in the last 10 years that amounted to nothing.
It was essentially frustrating when countless projects got announced, sounded interesting, and just never got mentioned again.
In the time since Gunn and Safran’s hiring was announced, there has been more leadership, communication, management, and unification of the valuable DC brand in a short span of time than in the last 10 years.
WB’s approach to DC projects needed a drastic change. The DCEU never reached its full potential due to many reasons, and if they kept trying it most likely would have kept failing to do so.
There are most definitely undeniable casualties of this shift into the DCU. This could also be a complete disaster that could result in another reboot. However, early signs seem to say that won’t be the case. With Gunn’s filmmaking experience and passion for comics, Safran’s production expertise, and their desire to build a solid DC foundation full of amazing characters and storylines, it all seems like it’s heading in the right direction.
