Jesse L. Martin has been a huge part of The Flash’s run but is he leaving the show, and will Joe West be in season 9?

Jesse L. Martin is one of the few remaining original stars of The Flash. Yes, there are still a lot of familiar faces on The CW’s Arrowverse series, but he is one of the only stars from the pilot, along with Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, and Danielle Panabaker, still to appear on a regular basis.

Martin has portrayed CCPD Detective (and later Captain) Joe West and has been involved in a number of major storylines throughout the show’s near-decade run. However, in recent years, his role has come into question as Joe hasn’t been featured in the same capacity that he once was.

Unfortunately, that role will be reduced in The Flash season 9.

Is Jesse L. Martin leaving The Flash?

No, Jesse L. Martin is not leaving The Flash but we will be seeing less of Joe West than normal. The actor was cast in NBC’s pilot The Irrational last year, which was subsequently ordered to series by the network. Unfortunately, that means Martin won’t be a series regular in the final season of The CW’s superhero series. However, it was confirmed back when he landed the pilot that he will appear in multiple episodes of The Flash season 9, presumably starting with the season premiere (as he was featured in footage in the season 9 trailer).

It’s not yet clear how (or if) Joe will be written out of the show. Like we said, The Flash has somewhat limited Joe’s involvement in recent seasons without much explanation, so having him not feature for a handful of episodes mightn’t require an excuse. However, don’t be surprised if he appears in a number of early episodes (which would have been filmed before The Irrational was picked up) before then returning for the series finale.

We might be seeing less of Joe West this season, but rest assured that he is still a part of the show.
