The Flash movie is almost upon us but who will Barry Allen be going up against in the DCEU movie?

After years in development hell, The Flash is finally ready to speed out of the Speed Force and onto the big screen. We’re not talking about Grant Gustin’s Scarlet Speedster, who has enjoyed an incredibly successful nine-season run on TV in the time between the movie’s announcement and release, we’re talking about Ezra Miller’s version of the character, who debuted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and various other DCEU movies.

Miller’s Flash appeared in a substantial role in 2017’s Justice League and that was supposed to pave the way for the Scarlet Speedster’s solo movie but delays and a change in direction for the DC Universe have slowed it down. Until now, that is, as the movie is finally set to premiere in theaters in June.

But after defeating Steppenwolf and an army of Parademons in Justice League, who is Barry Allen’s new threat?

The Flash movie villain explained

While DC Studios has been keeping a lid on it in regards to all things Flash, there have been a number of rumors over the years suggesting that the movie’s villain is actually an evil version of Barry Allen himself. A recent “leak” seems to back that up, as images of the movie’s merchandise have been making their way around the internet, giving fans their first look at a character named “Dark Flash”.

In the DC Comics, the term Dark Flash is used by a number of speedsters whenever they go down a villainous route. For Barry, he becomes the Dark Flash, a.k.a. the Negative Flash, when he is corrupted by the Negative Speed Force – the source of speed for his archenemy Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash.

Early rumors suggested that an alternate version of Barry would be antagonist of the film, and that does make sense with the little that we know about the movie, as The Flash seemingly goes back in time to save his mother and creates an offshoot timeline, changing everything. This would explain how he crosses paths with characters who didn’t exist in the previous DCEU, such as Supergirl (Sasha Calle) and Michael Keaton’s classic Batman. He also crosses paths with another version of himself, and it appears that they will team up with the other two heroes to stop the threat. It’s unclear at this point if this other Barry is the Dark Flash.

The figure is sporting an all-black suit with spikes on it, looking somewhat similar to The CW’s designs for speedsters Savitar (the Arrowverse’s evil Barry Allen) and The Rival on The Flash TV series.
