Marvel says No to fan-favorite MCU project
Young Avengers no more? Marvel producer has a disappointing update about the long-teased and heavily-rumored project in the MCU.
Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a turning point for Marvel Studios. It was about moving forward after a decade of storytelling that led to Avengers: Endgame, holding onto the threads that could continue and letting go of the ones from the past that had concluded.
Part of that has been introducing us to the next generation of heroes, with younger characters like Tommy and Billy Maximoff, Kate Bishop, kid Loki, and Cassie Lang all having somewhat prominent roles in recent or upcoming MCU projects. This has had fans convinced that a Young Avengers project is on the horizon, and that is a logical conclusion given the amount of young heroes and/or successors we’ve been seeing since Phase Four began.
However, it seems like the rumors, hopes, and dreams may not be leading to the project fans thought they would.
No current plans for a Young Avengers project in the MCU
Speaking to Inverse, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania producer Stephen Broussard revealed that the are no plans for a Young Avengers project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this time. That will undoubtedly be upsetting to Marvel fans, because the Young Avengers did seem to be one of the purposes of Phase Four given all of the young heroes. And with Cassie Lang becoming a superhero at the beginning of Phase Five in Quantumania, it did seem like we were heading in that direction.
That’s not to say that we won’t get it in the future, though, or that we won’t see the Young Avengers characters to continue to feature prominently in movies and Disney Plus TV shows. This is something that Broussard acknowledged, reaffirming that “a lot of Phase Four was about introducing the next generation and introducing new characters”. So we will continue to see younger heroes, but it might be some time before Marvel Studios considers a Young Avengers project.
WandaVision‘s Elizabeth Olsen also addressed the rumors surrounding the project last year, saying that she doesn’t think Marvel “have a real plan for that yet” as they often plan Phases at a time but that they always like to “keep all their options open”.
All of Phase Five is already mapped out, and we know at least three Phase Six movies thus far (but Marvel likely know the rest), it seems that the earliest we could see a Young Avengers project – if ever – would be Phase Seven.
At least we’ll get to see some the characters again before then… hopefully.
