With Marvel’s newest film hitting theaters, fans naturally want to know what Marvel properties they should watch before taking in the newest MCU film. After all, the film has some major connections to previous shows and movies, making it easy to get lost if you haven’t done your homework before seeing the film — or at the least, preventing you from fully appreciating some of the film’s connected plotlines and cameos.
So what Marvel properties should be on your watchlist before heading out to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania? Let’s take a look!
Watch before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
- Ant-Man
- Captain America: Civil War
- Ant-Man and The Wasp
- Avengers: Endgame
- Loki season 1
If you’re heading out to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania there are four particular films we’d recommend watching as well as one key Marvel Cinematic Universe set Disney Plus original series. Many of these selections are likely of no surprise to fans as they heavily involve the franchise’s lead character.
As such, watching these films would help to provide a full picture of the characters’ journeys leading them to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The same is said for the one Marvel Disney Plus show we recommend watching which helped to introduce a variant of the film’s key villain and also ties into the film’s ending.
Ant–Man (2015)
As the film that started it all, there is no denying that one of the most important Marvel titles to see before Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is 2015’s Ant-Man. The film is one that helps to introduce Scott Lang within the MCU as he suits up as Ant-Man for the very first time to face off against villainous Darren Cross. The film also helps to introduce audiences to Pym Particles, and key franchise players including Dr. Hank Pym and his daughter Hope van Dyne, Scott’s daughter Cassie Lang, and Jimmy Woo.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
After entering the MCU in Ant-Man, Scott Lang officially joins the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War after a brief encounter with Sam Wilson in Ant-Man. During his appearance in the film, Scott comes to the aid of Captain America as a member of Team Cap, facing off against other members of the Avengers in the film’s iconic airport battle. It’s also the first time we get to see Scott flex his powers alongside his fellow Avengers including his ability to grow in size to become Giant-Man.
Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)
Ant-Man and The Wasp play a key role in developing Scott’s relationships including his budding romance with Hope and his struggle to be the dad his daughter Cassie deserves. In addition to many developments on the relationship front, the film contains several key developments including the formal introduction and exploration of the Quantum Realm, Hope’s debut as The Wasp, and the arrival of Janet Van Dyne.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
While you could throw Avengers: Infinity War for good measure, Scott’s Ant-Man does not come into the picture until Avengers: Endgame, where he plays a key role in the Avengers’ fight to take down Thanos and bring back those who were snapped away. Using Scott’s knowledge of the Quantum Realm, the team is able to piece together a plan to travel back through time to stop Thanos and save the world. Basically, it’s the film that he achieves official Avenger status!
The film is also when Scott realizes he’s been missing for several years, having been trapped in the Quantum Realm for five years. As a result, several years have passed in his daughter’s life as Scott discovers his little girl is not so little now and that he’s missed out on several years of her life — paving the way for the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Loki season 1 (2021)
If you have time, we’d definitely encourage watching the entire first season of Loki. However, if you’re pressed for time the most pressing episode to watch would be the show’s season finale, “For All Time.” This is the episode that helps to formally introduce Kang within the MCU with the introduction of “He Who Remains,” one of Kang’s variants who has been running the TVA from the shadows. The episode helps to shine a light on the character and what his introduction will mean for the MCU.
