Marvel Comics: Fantastic Four are responsible for tragic New York event
By Mark Lynch
The Fantastic Four saved lives in their recent issue of Marvel Comics, but also destroyed lives in the process.
In writer Ryan North’s very first issue of the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm (the Thing) and his wife, Alicia Masters, were on a road trip. During the issue, the couple mentions that they miss the rest of the Fantastic Four and their kids. At first, this writer thought it was because they were on vacation. He was wrong. At the end of the issue, there’s an image of a giant crater where the Baxter Building and parts of New York used to be.
The next issue featured Reed and Sue and issue No. 3 starred Johnny Storm. Both issues mentioned a tragedy caused by the Fantastic Four. Normally, readers are forced to wait to see what happened. Thankfully, Ryan North didn’t make fans wait too long. The Mystery was revealed in issue No. 4 of the Fantastic Four.
Fantastic Four ruins the lives of a lot of New York citizens
During an invasion from what seemed like the Negative Zone, Marvel’s First Family was overwhelmed by their attackers. As predicted Reed Richards came up with a plan. He sent the Baxter Building and the surrounding block a year into the future. This way the building and the surrounding area would return exactly where it left unaffected. But he also sent the aliens into space at a different time in the future leaving them floating in space (Reed explained it better). A great idea that saved lives. Unfortunately, the victory didn’t come without a loss.
Reed did save the lives of dozens of people and the people who disappeared won’t even notice they’re gone. However, life will go on. The people who disappeared left jobs, friends, and families behind. Businesses would be shut down without anyone to run them. Even worse are the kids that were left without parents. It’s like what happened when people returned from Thanos’ blip. Just on a smaller scale.
During Marvel Comics’ Devil’s Reign, Vigilantism was made illegal in New York. Reed’s plan left New Yorkers justifiably furious. People they loved just disappeared. With a lot of time left before they return, things are going to get worse for the Fantastic Four before they get better. For the first time in a while, Marvel Comics’ First Family isn’t beloved by the public.
