Marvel Comics is bringing back the Ultimate Universe
By Mark Lynch
Marvel Comics is bringing back the Ultimate Universe and The Maker (Ultimate Reed Richards) is at the center of it.
Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Universe was a brilliant idea. The idea was to see what the Marvel universe, characters, and events would look like if it started in the year 2000. As expected, a lot of things changed. Mutant and human relations were worse than on Earth-616, Tony Stark never stopped drinking, and the Hulk literally ate people. Spider-Man didn’t change much, but his villain certainly did. Wilson Fisk was prepared to blow up a school to have Spider-Man killed.
Unfortunately, the Ultimate Universe didn’t last long. After Marvel’s Secret Wars (2015), the Ultimate Universe still existed, but the stories ended. Popular characters like Miles Morales and The Maker (Reed Richards) joined Earth-616 while others didn’t. Ending the universe may have been the plan all along. Although, maybe the stories weren’t popular enough to keep the universe going. That being said, there’s good news for fans of the Ultimate Universe. After eight years, Marvel is bringing it back.

Marvel announced that writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Bryan Hitch will team up to create the four part event Ultimate Invasion, which will come out in June.
Hickman spoke to Entertainment Weekly about it, voicing their excitement for it:
"“We also thought the very idea of Ultimate Comics needed to be inverted from what the original universe was—we wanted this to be something that could really only exist in the comic space: a new way of thinking about, and enjoying, a new version of the Marvel Universe. I’m pretty happy to say that it feels like we’ve accomplished those things and we’re very excited for everyone to get to read it.”"
As for what could happen in the return, Marvel.com reports:
"“Is it time for the Ultimate Universe to make its grand return? The Maker seems to think so, and the Illuminati must form once again to stop him from his plans to destroy—or perhaps rebuild—the universe, with Miles Morales at the center of it all!”"
Jonathan Hickman is a writer you can trust. What he did with the X-Men and mutants recently has been flawless. Bryan Hitch’s art is easily recognizable and always looks fantastic. He’s also the original artist for The Ultimates. The two of them together are the perfect duo to bring back the Ultimate Universe. It’ll be interesting to see what this means for Miles Morales. Does he stay in Earth-616 or does he return to Earth-1610? We’ll have to wait and see.
