Movie fans have been wondering when Avatar 2: The Way of Water will come out on Disney Plus. Unfortunately, it’s not happening this coming month.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now the third highest-grossing movie of all time. After a little bit of a back-and-forth with fellow James Cameron movie Titanic (which once held the No. 1 spot), it reclaimed the No. 3 spot this weekend, further signifying the dominance of the Avatar franchise, and more specifically, James Cameron himself. Now all that stands between it and the No. 1 spot is former champion Avengers: Endgame, and the first Avatar movie.

That level of success has easily guaranteed the immediate future for the franchise with the almost-complete Avatar 3, and it will likely pave the way for more success for the following sequels. But does its continued success also prevent Avatar 2‘s immediate release on Disney Plus?

That might indeed be the case, for the streamer has revealed its March 2023 line-up, and Avatar: The Way of Water is sadly not listed among the upcoming titles.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water release date predictions

After the pandemic, Disney movies typically had a 45 – 70 day theatrical release window, meaning that they would debut on Disney Plus sometime after that window closed. This is something we saw quite a bit with the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, as films such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsEternals, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would arrive on the streamer within that time frame (give or take a little here or there). Even Black Panther: Wakanda Forever followed suit, arriving just around two and a half months after its cinematic debut.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, it seems Disney is changing up that approach, because if the movie were to follow in its predecessors’ footsteps, it would have to premiere on Disney Plus by the end of March, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. This is likely down to how well Avatar 2 is continuing to perform at the box office months after its debut, so Disney likely don’t want to undercut the money it’s making by releasing it on Disney Plus too early when they can just hold it off for a little longer.

Right now, April seems like the most likely choice, so don’t be surprised if The Way of Water comes out then, but as we move further and further away from that initial 45 – 70 day theatrical release window, we head into uncharted territory, so a May release on Disney Plus is probably still on the table at this point.
