13 of the greatest comic book and nerd pop culture nerd icons of all time
By Mark Lynch
6. Mercedes Moné (Sasha Banks)
You can call her Sasha Banks, Mercedes Moné, or Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado. No matter the name, she’s one of nerd culture’s best icons. If you’re a WWE fan, you’ve seen her come to the ring as Sailor Moon or in attire that pays tribute to the late, great Eddie Guerrero. If you’ve seen season 2 of The Mandalorian, then you saw her as one of the actual Mandolorians, Koska Reeves.
Her appreciation for nerdy things is one of the reasons she hasn’t faltered since leaving the WWE. She’ll always be welcomed because she loves everything she is part of. Hopefully, she’ll return to the Star Wars universe in the future.
5. Pharoahe Monch
Pharoahe Monch is one of the few rappers who knows his comic books and adds them to his songs perfectly. For example, in his song “Amnesia” (featuring th1rt3en), he has a line, “Old man Logan, my memory slips.” This references Logan’s well-known awful memory. Now that’s a reference that comic book fans know and appreciate.
There’s also his massive comic book action figure collection. He doesn’t just collect them. He poses them in action and fun positions. It isn’t just the popular characters either. Spider-Punk, Beta Ray Bill, and Gray Hulk are only a few of the more obscure characters in his collection. A quick look at his Instagram and you’ll see all of the other nerdy things he’s into.
