The best and worst Marvel movies (according to critics)
By Cody Schultz
Critics have always had a lot to say about Marvel movies. Some they love, some they hate. Here are the Marvel movies they’ve dubbed the best and worst.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a vast and interconnected series of superhero films produced by Marvel Studios. It began with Iron Man in 2008 and has since expanded to include over 30 films, as well as multiple television shows.
One of the most remarkable things about the MCU is its interconnectivity. Each film and show is set in the same world and characters often cross over between them, creating a sense of continuity and a larger narrative arc. The MCU has also introduced new technologies, such as the Infinity Stones and the Quantum Realm, and explored complex themes like power, responsibility, and redemption.
The MCU has become a cultural phenomenon and has earned critical acclaim and box office success, with its films grossing billions of dollars worldwide. There have been many amazing Marvel movies to hit theaters over the years, but there have also been some that critics didn’t quite enjoy. What are the best and worst Marvel movies? Let’s take a look!
What are the best Marvel movies?
- Black Panther – 96% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
- Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame (Tie) – 94% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
- Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: No Way Home (Tie) – 93% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
According to critics, the best Marvel movie to have hit theaters over the years is 2018’s Black Panther which has an impressive 96% rating. This makes it the highest-rated Marvel movie, and the best movie in the eyes of critics.
Surprisingly, only one Avengers movie makes the Top 5 Marvel movies list in the eyes of critics with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Fittingly, the film that started the entire franchise also makes the list with 2008’s Iron Man.
What are the worst Marvel movies?
- Eternals and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (Tie) – 47% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
- Thor: Love and Thunder – 63% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
- Thor: Dark World – 66% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
- The Incredible Hulk – 67% Critics Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
While critics tend to appreciate most Marvel movies, they haven’t been the biggest fan of many of the franchise’s more recent releases with three of the lowest-rated Marvel movies being films released within recent years. Currently, the worst Marvel movies in the eyes of critics are 2021’s Eternals and this year’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania which both have a 47% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Unsurprisingly, while critics adored Thor: Ragnarok which is among the top-rated Marvel movies in the eyes of critics, they were not a fan of Thor: Love and Thunder or Thor: Dark World which are among the lowest-rated Marvel movies on Rotten Tomatoes. Finally, rounding out the worst Marvel movies in critics’ eyes is The Incredible Hulk which seems fitting given the film is almost always forgotten among fans.
