Henry Cavill’s return to the DC Universe could be imminent (in the most unexpected way)

Henry Cavill’s exit from the DC Universe as Superman sent shockwaves through the world of entertainment. Now a new rumor suggests he could return in the most unexpected way.

The days of the DC Extended Universe are coming to an end as DC Studios paves the way for its new, more coherent, DC Universe. The DCEU was always struggling to get off the ground, but the real moment we knew it was over was when the announcement came that Henry Cavill, who had only just returned to his role as Superman, would no longer play the Man of Steel.

It was a blow, for Cavill especially, who was excited to finally bring Superman back after years of uncertainty. But it was a clear indicator that DC Studios co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran were ready to move on from the DCEU and start afresh with a new, younger Superman.

While that project, now titled Superman: Legacy, will indeed move forward, a new rumor suggests that we could see Cavill back in the DCU sooner rather than later – but with one caveat: He wouldn’t be playing Superman.

Could Henry Cavill return to the DC Universe as another character?

A new report from Giant Freakin Robot claims that Henry Cavill had met with James Gunn about the possibility of playing a different character after the launch of the new DC Universe.

There is no official confirmation about him potentially playing a new character yet, but we do know that Cavill has spoken with Gunn both about his exit as Superman and the possibility of returning to the DCU in the future. After confirming that the Man of Steel star would no longer play the character going forward, Gunn tweeted that he and Peter Safran “had a great meeting” with Cavill and that they “talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future”.

Taking that into account, there is quite a strong possibility that Cavill could return in another DC project someday. After all, DCEU Batman, Ben Affleck, is rumored to return to the franchise to direct a future film, so why not bring Cavill back too?

As with all rumors, it’s important to take this one with a pinch of salt until confirmed by DC Studios, but since we already know Gunn and Cavill have discussed the future, it’s a rumor we should all keep in mind.
