As The CW’s successful Supernatural prequel concludes its first season, fans are left wondering if The Winchesters season 2 will happen.

After multiple attempts throughout Supernatural‘s run, The CW successfully launched a spinoff series just two years after the main show’s conclusion. Produced by Jensen and Daneel Ackles, The Winchesters is an origin story, if you will, focusing on the parents of Sam and Dean Winchester, John and Mary.

It’s been a joy to watch throughout the past few months as audiences saw how the pair met and fell in love. What might surprise people is that Mary was the one who introduced John to the life on the road hunting demons and monsters, and the pair weren’t alone as they were joined by Mary’s allies Carlos and Lata (as well as the all-knowing Ada Munroe and John’s mother Millie).

With the battle for good and evil going down in an explosive finale that finally saw our hunters take on the Akrida, all sights shift to the future. Could The Winchesters be back for another season?

Has The Winchesters been cancelled?

If you’re worried about the possibility that The Winchesters might have been cancelled, fear not, that is not the case. At least not yet. It’s true that things are rather unsettling at The CW right now, with the aftermath of its sale to Nexstar still being felt almost a year later.

Unfortunately, it will continue to be felt as the new owners of the network change its direction, meaning that only a few of its ongoing scripted shows will be renewed for new seasons (with All American already taking one of those spots).

Right now, The Winchesters is alive and well, but we will be crossing our fingers in the hopes that it gets renewed for a second season.

The Winchesters season 2 updates

The Winchesters season 2 is still a possibility for now. After all, it’s worth remembering that the show’s premiere was one of The CW’s most-watched broadcasts of the TV season, as it drew a remarkable 781,000 viewers. Sure enough, the ratings did decrease after that, but it did manage to find an audience (and after the network senselessly moved it to a later slot, it regained that audience when it was moved back).

Showrunner Robbie Thompson is “hopeful” they can “tell more stories” but acknowledges that they’re “not sure what’s happening”, telling TVLine that they have discussed options they may have to look into further down the road if The CW doesn’t renew it for a second season.
