Fans of James Spader’s Ultron could be in for a surprise as he is rumored to be returning in an upcoming project.

There have been many criticisms of the film Avengers: Age of Ultron but fans collectively agree that James Spader was not one of them. The star portrayed the villainous AI Ultron in the movie and delivered a chilling performance that stood out in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that received an otherwise lukewarm response.

However, it may not be the last we see of him in the role. As reported by The Direct, a post on a subreddit from a “trusted source” suggests that Spader could be reprising his villainous role in the upcoming MCU project Armor Wars.

Nothing is known as of yet as to what Armor Wars will be about or entail but, this isn’t the first time fans thought Ultron could be returning. He famously returned in the animated anthology series What If..? and then he was brought back in a non-canon way with Disney Cruise’s Avengers: Quantum Encounter.

Ultron was largely an AI being which means there is still a possibility that fragments of him remain in the ethers of the web. He was last seen in 2015 when Vision ultimately tore him to atoms at the end of Age of Ultron. There have hints and teases about the character since then such as The Department of Damage Control having the head of an Ultron Bot. It’s also been rumored that the same group is due to appear in Armor Wars as well which could link the two together.

Don Cheadle will be making his appearance as James Rhodes aka War Machine in Armor Wars and since he is tied to Tony Stark it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see the old villain return then. Additionally, if Marvel Studios are setting up a Young Avengers storyline down the road, having the villain that the Avengers once faced off against could be a great way to bring them together in a 2012 Avengers way.
