The Last of Us season 2 is happening but how long will it be before it arrives on our TV screens?
The Last of Us came, saw and conquered in 2023. The year is still in its first quarter and we already know it’s going to remain one of the (if not the very) best TV shows of the year. That’s just how much of an impact it made in a very, very short space of time. So short in fact that viewers are left wanting more immediately after its season 1 finale.
The show debuted with its nine-episode first season in January, and eight weeks later, it bows out with its finale. Bella Ramsey teased that the episode would be divisive, but one things fans can agree on is that they are in need of more The Last of Us.
Thankfully, more is on the way as the show was renewed for a second season by HBO shortly after it premiered in what was one of the many votes of confidence the cable network gave the show throughout its maiden run.
That said, when can audiences expect The Last of Us season 2 to premiere?
The Last of Us season 2 release date predictions
It’s going to be a lengthy wait for new episodes of The Last of Us. If you’ve watched some of HBO’s programming before, you’ll probably already know that, as the cable network’s originals usually have quite the extended gap between when their seasons air.
In an interview with Collider, star Pedro Pascal hinted that there is a chance filming for season 2 could commence before the end of 2023. That’s a good thing, but it’s not yet set in stone, so it could still commence in 2024 instead. And even then, production will obviously take some time.
Taking that into account, and the lengthy 18-month wait between when the first season 1 concluded filming and aired on TV, we’re likely looking at a fall 2024 release date for season 2 at the very earliest. But don’t be surprised if the show ends up returning in 2025 instead.
