Shazam 2 arrives in theaters on Friday, March 17, 2023, but are you also able to stream it at home? Here’s when it could come to HBO Max.
Shazam 2, or more officially titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods flies into theaters this weekend. Its arrival marks the first DC film release of 2023 and the return of Zachary Levi as the beloved superhero man-child.
According to the official synopsis from Warner Bros. Pictures, Shazam 2 promises “more excitement, adventure and comedy, along with all-new realms, bigger threats, monsters, and mythical creatures,” as the Shazamily faces a trio of vengeful ancient gods in the Daughters of Atlas. Initial reviews for the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s surprise hit haven’t been terribly positive, although audiences do seem to be enjoying it.
Our own Cody Schultz calls it a “fantastic movie that is not to be missed,” even despite its shortcomings. Although not a perfect film, it sounds like Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a fun superhero romp that delivers some thrilling action. So where can you watch it?
Where can I watch Shazam 2?
Shazam 2 releases on Friday, March 17, and, as of this writing, is only showing exclusively in theaters. So if you want to watch it, you’ll have to check your local theater times.
Unfortunately, this isn’t one of those instances where the movie is dropping on a streaming service simultaneously. Those days appear to be over, unfortunately. If you’re hoping to watch Shazam! Fury of the Gods, you’ll have to wait for it to come to digital platforms like Prime Video or Vudu or streaming services.
What streaming service will Shazam 2 come to and when?
Since Shazam! Fury of the Gods is being distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, it will be hosted on HBO Max when it finally does come to streaming platforms. However, we don’t have an exact date yet. Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t announced a streaming date for Shazam 2, and probably won’t until they see how it performs at the box office first.
The studio is committed to a 45-day theatrical window, meaning we’ll be waiting at least 45 days before we can watch it from home. That window could increase though, should Shazam 2 do well in theaters.
Prior to the pandemic, movies would play in theaters for 75 to 90 days before releasing online. If we’re looking for a more recent example though, Black Adam, another superhero blockbuster from Warner Bros., was released in theaters on Oct. 21 and came to HBO Max 57 days later on Dec.16. The Batman, on the other hand, took only 45 days to come to HBO Max, and that film performed rather well at the box office.
It appears that the streaming release window varies from movie to movie, but the average these days seems to be between 45 and 60 days. That would put Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ arrival on HBO Max somewhere in early to mid-May 2023.
