James Gunn directing Superman: Legacy is an unexpected gift
By Mark Lynch
James Gunn directing Superman: Legacy is the best thing that’s happened to DC Comics movies in years.
Depending on who you ask, you’ll get a different opinion on how James Gunn and Peter Safran are doing as heads of DC Studios. Some people don’t like that they have changed so many things. Others are enjoying it. There’s another group of people who think it’s too early to judge what they have been doing. This writer is in the latter. This writer will say that he appreciates Gunn’s boldness.
The upcoming batch of movies and TV shows prove that he’s ready to try new things. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Booster Gold, and Creature Commandos may not instantly seem like projects that scream, “Shut up and take my money!” to the mainstream audience. What’s great is the same thing could have been said about Guardians of the Galaxy. A team that went from not being mentioned all that much to a hugely successful part of a billion dollar franchise. This shows that he has faith in himself and the creative teams that are with him.
It isn’t just the unknown that he’s working with, though. James Gunn also announced that a new Superman project is on its way. Not only that, he’ll be directing it as well. Gunn confirmed it after weeks of speculation, tweeting:
As you can see in the tweet above, James Gunn confirms that he will be directing Superman: Legacy. Comicbook.com reported on the release of the movie’s official synopsis, which says,
"“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”"
During an emotional series of tweets (that you can read here), James Gunn said that he was offered Superman years ago and declined. The death of his father is part of the reason he’s decided to direct it now. It’s reasons like this that this writer thinks Gunn will do a fantastic job directing Superman: Legacy.
No matter how goofy the Guardians of the Galaxy was, there was always heart behind the jokes. Superman is the epitome of heart in comic books. Plus, Clark Kent can be goofy too. It helps him hide his secret identity. James Gunn will show all of those sides of the characters and fans will love it. This is on top of the love Gunn will put into directing this movie. When Superman: Legacy debuts, people will fall back in love with The Man of Steel all over again.
