1. Iron Man 3 (2013)

The third and final entry of the Iron Man series came in 2013, and let me just start off by saying this is a really different movie compared to the first two. This one was directed by Shane Black instead of Jon Favreau, from a script he co-wrote with Drew Pearce.

The movie continues Tony Stark’s story, who’s dealing with the aftermath of the events we saw in The Avengers. When a terrorist named the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) threatens to destroy the country, Tony must use all of his resources to stop him. Along the way, he faces challenges that test his character and his abilities as the superhero we know and love.

The cast of Iron Man 3 is really strong, with Downey Jr. delivering yet another incredible performance as the titular character, unsurprisingly. Gwenyth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, and Jon Favreau reprise their fan-favorite roles. Kingsley is also definitely a standout as the Mandarin, bringing both terror and humor to the role.

The movie introduces us to new characters, such as Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), who add depth to the story.

One of the best moments of Iron Man 3 is the action sequence at the end, where Tony unleashes all of his Iron Man suits to fight off the villains. The twist involving the Mandarin is also a highlight, adding a layer of complexity to the story.

However, some fans were disappointed with the portrayal of the Mandarin, feeling that it did not do justice to the character from the comics. As someone who didn’t read the comics, admittedly, this didn’t bother me. That’s just my opinion!

In comparison to the first two Iron Man movies, Iron Man 3 has a new tone. It focuses more on Tony Stark as a character, exploring his vulnerabilities and weaknesses. There’s more of a darker tone and feel, with serious themes and higher stakes. That really, really works for me. I would rather get into the nitty gritty of a character’s emotions and struggles than watch another battle scene.

Tony is a complex character, arguably one of the most in the MCU, and Iron Man 3 really puts that on display.

While some fans may prefer the lighter, more humorous tone of the first two movies, Iron Man 3 is a necessary evolution for the character and the franchise. And because of how many risks it takes, this is my favorite of the trilogy!
